Steps to Getting Back on the Road

The Return to Duty process is initiated when a driver with a verified violation in their DOT program is no longer allowed to perform safety-sensitive tasks.

 

  1. The employer then provides the driver with a list of qualified Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs) who can help them. The driver chooses their SAP from this list or based on their own research.

  2. Once the driver contacts a DOT-qualified SAP and agrees to participate in their program, their request is accepted and the SAP is officially designated to assist them. The designated SAP will provide support throughout the process.

  3. The next step is for the driver to meet with their SAP for a face-to-face clinical evaluation. This assessment helps the SAP determine the necessary recommendations for treatment and education. The driver must comply with these recommendations in order to receive a Return to Duty Letter and become eligible for RTD testing.

  4. Once the driver has completed the recommended treatment and education, they will be sent for an RTD test by their current or prospective employer. If the test results come back negative, the driver is no longer prohibited from performing safety-sensitive tasks.

  5. After returning to work, the employer is responsible for following the testing plan created by the SAP during the prescribed time. This includes completing any required follow-up testing.
